Less School, More Time...

I'm sure no one is around this place much anymore, but I've decided to take the time to update things around here and be more purposeful about loading things on to here. As art has continued to weave it's way into everything in my life, I've just be reminded how important it is for me to spend time doing it. I have a couple weeks of exams left, but hopefully I'll be on here a lot more.

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 14

Today's Prompt - Favourite Fairytale

I don't know many classic fairytales, so Disney it is!

I love Beauty and the Beast. Belle is my favourite Disney Princess, and it's just an awesome movie... I really like how this drawing turned out, those it was difficult to get the proper colours when I wasn't sure how they were going to turn out on the dark paper.

Total Drawing Time: 2 hours, 43 minutes

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 13

Today's Prompt - Comic

After multiple attempts at writing an original comic of my own, I decided to break my short hiatus from the drawing challenge by recreating an classic comic - Calvin and Hobbes. Spurred on by friends, I did this drawing simply to get the ball rolling again... Hopefully I won't be taking too many more breaks in the remaining days.

Total Drawing Time: 22 minutes

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 11

Today's Prompt - Turning Point in Your Life

A big turning point in my life was when I realized that, even if I make a mistake or screw something up, the world is not going to end. It was a big lesson for me to learn, and it's something that I'm definitely still in the process of figuring out.

My niece, Gabby, is almost 3, and she makes mistakes sometimes. She'll spill something, or drop something, and she'll apologize and have a bit of a cry, but will quickly move on and forget about what happened. She is such a source of joy and is a little bundle of energy. She is fast to forgive, even when she has to forgive herself. She's awesome.

Total Drawing Time: 46 minutes

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 10

Today's Prompt - Favourite Candy

I had such a hard time trying to decide what my favourite candy is. I was able to limit it down to Everlasting Gobstoppers, Skittles, Fun Dip, Nerds and Caramel Apple Lollypops. After a necessary trip to 711 for inspiration, I sat at home trying to think of a way to draw them in an interesting way... I couldn't do it. So, rather than draw them, I decided to draw WITH them.

And that was the beginning of my foray into candy art.

Candy used in the piece:
Skittles (Original and Wild Berry)
Everlasting Gobstoppers
Smarties
Fun Dip
Caramel Apple Lollypop
Sprinkles

...I ended up just eating the nerds.

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 9

Today's Prompt - Favourite TV Show

I love Bones. I've been watching it since it started, and know everything there is to know about the show. It helps me get through long nights, and has turned into a bit of an escape for me. Booth and Bones forever! :]
I almost didn't post this video because I was not pleased with the final product... That's the perfectionist in me coming out. I'm hoping that, through this challenge, my perfectionist tendencies will have less of a hold on me, and I won't feel so anxious with making drawing something that is less than perfect.
Total drawing time: 1hr50m

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 8

Today's Prompt - Favourite Animated Character

It may surprise some people that my favourite animated character isn't Lightning McQueen. Anyone who knows me knows I take my animated movies quite seriously, but it didn't take me long to figure out who my favourite animated character is. Total drawing time: Without text: 1 hr 4 m. With text: 1 hr 18 m.

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 7

Today's Prompt - Favourite Word

Some people have been surprised that I didn't choose to do "Roar". While "Roar" is indeed my favourite thing to say, it isn't actually my favourite word. Something about this word is just really... Beautiful. Looking forward to the next few days of drawing, getting back into some prompts I enjoy.

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 6

Today's Prompt - Favourite Character from a Book, Not in a Movie

I chose to draw Screwtape, from CS Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. He's a senior devil in Hell who is mentoring a younger tempter. Screwtape is a highly experienced tempter who has a very strong understanding of human weakness.

This drawing was the first real challenge for me, for a number of reasons. 1. I had a think of a book character that I like. 2. I didn't have much reference for the character, because they couldn't be in a movie. The other thing that contributed to this being a really challenging drawing for me was that I was trying to study for an exam and had a limited amount of time.

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 5

see note after video

Today's Prompt - Best Friend

This is Katie, my best friend. She is... I can't even think of a word to describe her. She's the greatest. It was actually tough for me to do this drawing, as I had a hard time accepting that nothing I draw is going to fully convey how awesome she is. I didn't want to give her any less than she deserves. But, when it comes down to it, nothing is going to measure up. Plus I know that she'd just encourage me and tell me to do my best, and then probably give me angry eyes when I say that my best isn't good enough, and then blush and/or tear up as she reads about how incredible I think she is. Thank you Little Red, for always being there for me. Things really are better when we're together.

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 4

In today's drawing I really challenged myself by stepping outside of my comfort zone... I used pencil crayons to draw the entire picture. Usually the only times I use pencil crayons is on birthday or Christmas cards. I am quite pleased with the results and think that they will be getting a bit more use now...

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 3

This drawing didn't have a lot of effort put into it, as I was instead putting my effort into studying for my Theoretical Logic exam... Now that I've finished writing the exam (yay!) I've been able to upload the movie!

Today's prompt was 'Favorite Food'

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 2

Day 2 of my 30 day challenge. This one was drawn last night, during a much needed break from studying.
I really enjoyed doing this drawing as it was my first time really working with white on black... It's a lot different than my usual style, and really requires you to think differently about what you're doing. I definitely think I'll be doing it again.
Interesting note about this drawing... I'm pretty sure the prompt of 'favourite animal' was asking me to draw MY favourite animal, but I decided to draw my sister's favourite animal instead. She really likes wolves, and I think they're pretty cool too... And much more interesting than my favourite animal: cows. Don't ask, I just really like 'em. :]

Today's prompt: favourite animal

30 Day Drawing Challenge - Day 1

I've decided to take part in a 30 day drawing challenge. Each day, for 30 days, I will do a drawing of whatever the prompt is. Some days (like today!), I will also post a video of me doing the drawing!

I think this challenge will be good for me for many reasons. I'm a total perfectionist, and the idea of sharing work that isn't PERFECT literally makes me sick to my stomach. With a daily drawing, though, I don't have time to perfect it, and that's the beauty of it. It will also help me broaden my skills, as there are a lot of things on the list I would never have drawn before...

This drawing is actually yesterdays drawing. Official start date of my 30 day challenge was April 13th. Let's go!

Randy

A couple of months ago the head pastor at my church stepped down and I was asked to do a portrait for his Goodbye Party. This is what I came up with, with reference photos from Rob Campbell Photography.
